Meeting My Deadline

Flew to Washington, DC today for a meeting tomorrow but I still had time to go see a movie -- The Painted Veil -- completing my effort to see every movie nominated for a Golden Globe.

"The Painted Veil," starring Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, is about a doctor with marital troubles who takes his wife with him to a cholera-infected part of China in 1925. The cinematography is beautiful, but the story is a little ponderous.

I couldn't find three nominees -- either they've come and gone or they're not out yet:

"The Lives of Others" nominated for Best Foreign Language Film
"Nomad" nominated for Best Original Score
"Home of the Brave" nominated for Best Original Song

So here are my predictions for the 14 Golden Globe movie categories. (I predict these will be the winners, though they're not necessarily the movies I think deserve to win.)

Best Motion Picture -- Drama: The Queen
Best Performance by an Actress -- Drama: Helen Mirren/The Queen
Best Performance by an Actor -- Drama: Forest Whitaker/The Last King of Scotland
Best Motion Picture -- Comedy or Musical: Dreamgirls
Best Performance by an Actress -- Comedy or Musical: Meryl Street/The Devil Wears Prada
Best Performance by an Actor -- Comedy or Musical: Sacha Baron Cohen/Borat
Best Animated Feature Film: Cars
Best Foreign Language Film: Letters From Iwo Jima
Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Jennifer Hudson/Dreamgirls
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Jack Nicholson/The Departed
Best Director: Martin Scorsese/The Departed
Best Screenplay: Patrick Marber/Notes on a Scandal
Best Original Score: Gustavo Santaolalla/Babel
Best Original Song: Listen/Dreamgirls

Keep score along with me Monday night.

sorry, the painted veil according to the poster and opening credits of the film, should be starring naomi watts (1st listed) and edward norton (2nd listed). also as clearly intended in the maugham's novel and the adapted script, agreed to by norton, curran and nyswaner, this is primarily the story of kitty (watts) and her self-discovery journey, told from her viewpoint.

with due respect to norton who is a good actor, please do not slight/down-play watts/kitty in favour of norton/walter and deprive watts of what she works hard for, deserves to have and entitles to. she is not to be taken for granted all the times.
