A Teachable Moment

"No Child..." is a brilliant one-woman show running at the Kirk Douglas Theater in Culver City. Nilaja Sun tells of her experiences as a "teaching artist" in New York City's high schools. Set in the fictional Malcolm X High School in the Bronx -- Sun portrays teachers, administrators, custodians and all sorts of students she encountered in her attempts to teach the students how to put on a play.

The show is a salute of sorts to educators who day after day battle indifference, adolescence, bureaucracy, unstable homes, crime and drugs to teach our country's young people.

Sun's ability to physically and vocally represent so many characters instantly on stage is remarkable. Her face alone is a masterpiece, going from men to women, boys to girls in the blink of an eye.

An off-Broadway hit at the Barrow Street Theater in 2006 & 2007, I'm glad Sun was able to bring this unforgettable performance to the Southland.
