Before the show Friday night I had dinner at Dolores Restaurant, one of the last remaining mid-century coffee shops on the Westside.

When my waiter, Tommi, brought my dinner roll he let me know I could have another one if I wanted because "these are kind of small tonight."

I commented they used to serve enormous dinner rolls. They really were huge, puffy, enormous things.

Tommi explained the woman who used to make them retired five months ago. "Several folks have tried her recipe but no one can get them to come out like hers did."

I just love the idea that someones retirement would prove that, at least in this case, some people are irreplaceable.

I wonder if she also was responsible for maintaining their neon sign?
