Everybody Loves "August: Osage County"

Without a doubt, the broad consensus is "August: Osage County" has a lock on the Best New Play Tony Award on Sunday.

And I was thrilled to see this import from the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago last night.

What a roller coaster! This extended dysfunctional family in Oklahoma just gets more and more messed up as the evening progresses.

Deanna Dunagan creates one of the all-time great Mother-Monsters on stage. The equally impressive Amy Morton, as the oldest daughter, reminds us that -- try as we might -- we can't escape becoming our parents.

I saw playwright Tracy Letts' off-Broadway show "Bug" a few years ago and I noted then his ability to just keep turning that vice tighter and tighter. This show's vice is turbo-charged.

Ultra-Celebrity Sightings: From the photo above you can tell Doris Roberts was in Thursday's audience. And as if that weren't enough, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban sat just a few rows in front of us. Kidman was sporting a baby bump and looked ravishing.
