Looking for a Sign

In a game lasting only 2 hours and 9 minutes, the Dodgers beat the Mets 2 to 1 today. Mets pitcher -- and future Hall of Famer -- Pedro Martinez (who the Dodgers traded away for Delino DeShields 12 years ago because Martinez was "too skinny") was 5 outs away from a No-Hitter when Dodger Antonio Perez got a Triple and Jason Werth got a Home Run.

I was pretty tired when I left home today for the day game at Dodger Stadium. I felt like I was driving half asleep.

On the weekends I take Sunset Boulevard to get to Dodger Stadium. There's a left turn lane from Sunset onto Elysian Way which leads to the stadium. When they're expecting a big crowd (today's attendance was 48,055) they put a sign in the road that allows the lane next to the left turn lane to also turn left.

So I was surprised today when I tried to turn left from that extra lane and a traffic control officer tried to make me drive straight through the intersection (and miss the turn to Dodger Stadium). Of course I refused and yelled at him that the sign said I could turn left. He came over to my car and threatened me with a ticket if I turned left and said, "I'm about to move that sign." I told him I was excited at the prospect of seeing him in court.

Ultimately, however, I chickened out, pulled through the intersection and made a U-turn at the next intersection to go back to the Stadium.

But there's nothing like the first confrontation of the day to get that blood flowing.
