Surprise!

What a thrill it was to receive a last minute invitation to sit in the Reed and Davidson box (again) tonight at the Hollywood Bowl. I was especially excited because the program for the evening was the music of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, one of my favorites.

In the photo above Dr. Arthur C. Bartner (left) conducts the Trojan Marching Band which joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the finale of the 1812 Overture as fireworks lit up the sky.

One of the loud percussion fireworks accidentally went off about 30 minutes before the concert while all the swells in their boxes were still eating and drinking. BOOM! People screamed, then laughed, and the poor old lady in the box next to ours nearly jumped out of her skin. I'm afraid my scream may have startled her more than the actual fireworks explosion.
