TV's Touch of Class

Went to see Kitty Carlisle Hart in concert tonight at the El Portal Theater in North Hollywood. She's with her Musical Director David Lewis in the photo.

At nearly 96 years of age (older than Grandmother Green) Hart is a biological astonishment. She's not retiring anytime soon, in fact she announced from the stage she, "wants more gigs."

I think my fascination with celebrity starting by watching game shows growing up -- including "To Tell The Truth," where Hart was a regular panelist for 15 years. I remember thinking how she epitomized the elegance of New York City.

Hart sang songs by and told stories about her friendships with Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rogers, Oscar Hammerstein, Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe and Irving Berlin. She also talked about her costars in "A Night At The Opera," the Marx Brothers. And of course she talked about her late husband, the playwright Moss Hart. What memories!

Lots of celebrities in the audience including:

  • Mr. Blackwell
  • Earl Holliman
  • Jayne Meadows
  • Renee Taylor and Joseph Bologna
  • Bruce Vilanch

I saw her on Saturday night -- she was breathtaking and every bit the class act I remembered (I also posted my "review" of the evening at www.steveonbroadway.com). Luminaries that night included Mandy Patinkin and Cybil Shepard.
