Not So Good The Morning After

Went to see the bus-and-truck version of the new musical, "Little Women," tonight at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood.

I originally saw this show on Broadway on December 30, 2004 and just went back and read my blog entry for that night. Back then I wrote the show stood a good chance of winning the Best New Musical Tony in June, 2005.

Either I was wildly optimistic or the performance of the show on the road is a lot flatter. I could barely keep my eyes open tonight.

However, Maureen McGovern who starred in the show on Broadway and now is touring with it continues to impress. The stage lit up whenever she was on it. Too bad she isn't in about two-thirds of the show.

Ted, I also loved Maureen McGovern in Little Women (and she was the ONLY thing I loved about the show), but when I saw this tuner on Broadway, the "star" -- Sutton Foster -- was out for the performance. Unfortunately, she also was a no-show when I saw Thoroughly Modern Millie immediately after she won the Tony. I'm hoping she'll be on hand when I finally take in The Drowsy Chaperone next month.

As for Little Women, I agree with your overall assessment. Just like the urge to provide every great song with a dance remix, there's a propensity toward turning every great story into a musical. Some things are better left alone.
