Last night I caught the visually-stunning Spanish-language film "Pan's Labyrinth" which has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.
What a trip! Set in Spain at the end of WWII, a little girl copes with the horror of fascists closing their grip on the nation by discovering an underground lair where a faun informs her she is the underworld's princess whose return they've been awaiting.
Like all good fairy tales, the girl must pass three tests to prove she is, in fact, the princess.
It's a good story -- but it's the visual images that impress. Especially Pale Man -- a monster with eyeballs in the palm of his hands. In order to see he has to hold his hands to his forehead, palms out. Creepy!
