Wednesday night I went to see a screening of a movie due out later this summer called "Savage Grace." Starring Julianne Moore, this film tells the true, tragic story (why is this the week for tales about very messed-up families?) about Barbara Daly who married above her class to Brooks Baekeland, the heir to the Bakelite plastics fortune.
The birth of their only child, Tony, throws their already unbalanced relationship further under. As he grows older Tony grows closer and closer to his very lonely mother as she tries to maintain her place in high society while moving from city to city every few years.
Following the family from 1946 to 1972, the film doesn't flinch as the mother-son relationship goes terribly, terribly awry. Julianne Moore gives a very brave performance. Not an easy movie to watch, but one you're not likely to forget anytime soon.
