Roofless Behavior
Last Wednesday I received a last minute invitation to attend a concert at the Hollywood Bowl. While any opportunity to go to the Bowl is welcome, I have to admit the Jazz at the Bowl program wasn't my favorite -- by a long stretch.
Three bands performed over the course of the evening -- Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band, Roy Hargrove Big Band and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band. While the music was good, none of the bands had the stage presence needed to command an audience at the Bowl. In fact, the concert ended with the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Band simply finishing a number and walking off the stage. No bows, no encores -- just adios. OK, whatever.
